intertextuality Flashcards
intertextuality
the relationship within one text to another text. This can be on
the level of content, but also form.
intertextuality: quotation
direct reference, using the verbatim words from one text within
another
INTERTEXTUALITY: ALLUSION
an allusion references that work
indirectly or in passing.
INTERTEXTUALITY: WHAT DOES THIS
ACHIEVE?
Establishing an audience with a shared body of knowledge;
Drawing upon (or transforming) the meanings of the earlier text: these
references prompt the reader to “consider whether elements of the
evoked text enrich or qualify the meaning of the allusive text.
INTERMEDIALITY
references and citations that involve two works from different media
effect of intermediality
fresh perspectives, symbolic enrichment
intermediality: ekphrasis
“verbal description of, or meditation upon, a nonverbal work of art, real or imagined, usually a painting or sculpture.”
-> concerned with the verbal representation of visual
representation
INTERMEDIALITY: WORDS AND MUSIC
-> concerned with the verbal
representation of music
This can happen at the level of both content (e.g., describing a
symphony) and form (e.g., incorporating the patterns of music into
the writing)
ADAPTATION
In adaptation we assume a clearer link between the text and its
source material (though this isn’t necessarily made explicit!) as well
as a measure of comprehensiveness.
how intertextuality, intermediality and adaptation relate
Intertextuality: all reference of one text to another is intertextual.
Intermediality: if the intertextuality involves different media, it’s also intermedial.
Adaptation: if there is a sense of thoroughness or clear link to multiple parts, it’s also adaptation
