How are polar questions structured?
Auxiliary fronting in English: (do) you like rice
Change in WO in French: verb movement SVO->VSO
How are content questions structured?
Wh- fronting or
Wh in-situ
What is wh fronting?
Question word at the beginning of a sentence#
WHO did it? WHAT did they do?
What is wh in-situ?
Question word replacing the constituent in a declarative sentence
Give examples of wh in-situ
Chinese: ta shi shei? ta shi Gatha
English: echo questions-you love who?
How else might interrogatives be indicated?
with particles, special interrogative mood affixes on verbs, intonation
Where do interrogative markers occur?
Either on whichever element is the focus of the question (Quechua)
OR in a particular syntactic position; after the first word or after the 1st constituent of the clause (Russian)
How does French structure questions?
Using both wh- fronting and wh in-situ
How is wh- fronting restricted in English? Is this the same in all languages?
English: only one wh- phrase can be fronted
Bulgarian allows multiple
How is wh-fronting structured?
the wh- word moves to a position at the left edge of the clause, leaving a gap where the replaced constituent would be
How is the wh- word selected?
Same properties (case and semantic properties) as the pronominal form person=who, place=where
