What the standard deviation tells us…

A
  • High SD:
    = scores are more spread around the mean = more variation in scores = scores less consistent = more individual differences
  • Low SD: (close to 0)
    = scores are less spread around the mean = less variation in scores = scores more consistent = less individual differences

  • provides good indication of average/typical score
  • generally higher the mean = greater the score/effect
  • if asked about median/range approach the question the same way
