What is violence?
Intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual oneself, another person, or against a group or community that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, deprivation
What else is used when use of power is in play?
Intimidation and bullying
What is self directed violence?
-suicide or self harm
What is collective violence?
Violence between groups or nations
What is interpersonal violence?
Violence between individuals
-physical, psychological, sexual, and neglect/deprivation
What does interpersonal violence include?
-recipient, perpetrator, nature of violence, the environment in which violence occurs, relationship between perpetrator and the recipient of violence, and the motivation of the violence
What is patriarchal terrorism?
-cases in which the male partner attempted to dominate and assume control over his partner. Most physically violent
What is situational violence?
Cases in which a situation produced an escalation of conflict and the partner initiated physical aggression based in the situational conflict
What basis does violence and criminality have?
Biological basis
Who usually abuses elders?
By family members or caregivers
- 90% are family members
- continues in the care home
Who are at high risk for elderly abuse?
African American, low socioeconomic status
- females are at more risk
- Cognitive/physical impairment
What are risk factors of violence for older adults?
- impaired cognitive function
- lack functional ability
- power differential exists/unable to resist or report
- risk for sexual abuse includes dependence on others, physical frailty, cognitive limitations
- associated with physical frailty, alterations in mental status
- dependency barriers to detecting sexual abuse (increase risk of abuse, low rate of reporting)
- negative attitudes toward aging (glorification of young contribute to elder abuse)
What are individual risk factors for abuse?
- substance abuse
- mental health conditions
- exposure to violence in childhood
What are older adults more likely to report?
Physical/sexual abuse
-have more abuse then they admit
What are some nursing interventions for abuse?
- educate public and health professionals about elder abuse
- explain their rights to older adults
- listen to older adults
- suggestions to keep themselves safe
- support older adults in being active and engaged with social networks
