Interoperability & Data Exchange Flashcards
What is interoperability?
The ability of computer systems to exchange and make use of information.
Why is the motivation for interoperability?
There are a large number of people from different disciplines usign different software that need to exchange information. Design changes occur frequently and new data is exchanged all the time.
What is closed BIM and what are its limitations?
Developing a model where all softwares are from the same vendor and are compatible.
A limitation of this is that it is harder to collaborate with others who don’t use the same tools.
What is open BIM and what are its limitations?
Open BIM is using various different softwares from different vendors to form a model.
A limitation is a potential error in translation between softwares.
What is lonely BIM?
When a model is developed using only one software.
What is industry foundation classes (IFC)?
IFC is a global open standard to facilitate interoperability between different softwares using a neutral, open format.
What are the advantages and limitations of using IFC?
Advantages:
- Models can be exchanged between any compatible software and openBIM is achieved.
- Promotes collaboration and increases efficiency.
Disadvantages:
- It is complex and diffuclt to maintain.
- Data loss or inconsistencies during exchanges.
What is bidirectional interoperability in the context of structural analysis?
Bidirectional interoperability is a two-way exchange between an analysis model and a reference model. When changes are made on one of the models, it is updated on the other.
What is COBie?
Is the handover/exchange of digitial information for facility management and operation of a facility. It is taken from a BIM model and is a requirement for level 2 BIM. It is also a subset of IFC.
What is a CMMS?
A CMMS (computerised maintainence management system) is a complete data set of how a facility should be managed.
