Internet Flashcards
Define and explain four methods of finding information/ websites
Web crawler - a program that automatically browses all web pages in a systematic manner. Used to gather specific types of info from web pages, such as harvesting email addresses
Search engine - an application accessed over the internet that maintains indexes of web pages and logical operators/key words to find the information you require
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) - the recognised method for referring to resources on the internet. If you know the web address (URL) of a site you can simply type it in
Hyperlinks - an area of a web page that contains a link to another location on the Web. You can surf the Internet, which means that you are using hyperlinks to move from one area of interest to another
Explain by giving an example, how file transfer protocol could be used by the organisation
FTP is a standard set of rules that have been established to allow the exchange of large files over the Internet
Used for uploading a finished website to a web server
State an advantage with an example of FTP
You are not limited to file size unlike with email attachments
eg.can be used for uploading a large database of sales from one branch of the organisation to the head office
Explain, by giving an example, how online databases could be used by the organisation
Product, customer and order information is readily available to the company from anywhere and customers can place their orders/check stock etc over the internet
What is distributed computing?
Where a series of computers are networked together, each working on solving the same problem, sharing same data processing/bandwidth
Describe an application where distributed computing is used
SETI: (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project
Their purpose is to search for intelligent life outside the earth.
To do this a radio telescope is used.
In order to search the narrow bandwidth signals lots of computer power is needed.
State three advantages of distributed computing
Reduces cost because an expensive powerful computer such as a supercomputer is not needed
Can improve performance by adding more computers
Can pass work to computers anywhere in the world using the Internet
State three disadvantages of distributed computing
Issues with the security of data spread out on so many different computers
Heavy reliance on networks and communications which may not always be reliable
Increased costs owing to the use of expensive communication lines
Define and explain how a Boolean search can be used to access information
Allows you to combine words and phrases using the words AND, OR, NOT and NEAR to limit, widen, or define your search.
Eg. Using NOT will narrow a search by excluding certain terms (France NOT Canada)
Name four requirements a company has to put in place to operate e-commerce (interactive online)
Trained staff are required to maintain a website - the site needs to be created using web design software and updated regularly
Catalogue of stock/ stock database - allows customers to browse for products, checks prices, information
Methods of secure payment - this facility allows products to be added, totalled and paid for using debit/credit cards and secure encryption protocols
Database of customer orders - used for marketing to customers (future purchases) and for records in case of returns
Name an advantage and disadvantage of dial up
Advantage: can be used anywhere there is a phone line
Disadvantage: very slow and limits its use - a download on dialup can take minutes compared to broadband
Name an 3 advantages and a disadvantage of broadband
Advantage: broadband can make cheap phone calls via the Internet
Makes video conferencing possible
Don’t have to waste time connecting to the Internet
Disadvantage: you pay a monthly subscription so more expensive if light user wether you use it or not
Name three advantages of mobile access to the Internet
Can access email, surf the Internet from wherever you are (on the move)
Can easily modify your plans eg. Flights, trains, hotels
Increase in realtime collaborative working eg. Video/voice conferencing
Name three disadvantages of mobile access to the Internet
It affects home/ work balance
Poor connectivity, many black spots
Decreases battery life on mobile devices
State three advantages of e-commerce to the CUSTOMERS
Can be done 24/7 - not restricted by opening times of shops
Can find obscure goods that are not available locally
