what is the Peace of Westphalia?
first international organization in the west (1648) gather to make agreements to avoid wars and peacefully resolve conflict
What was the Scramble for Africa?
European powers fought over Africa for it’s resources and slaves, it was divided up and cultures were destroyed.
What does the term Civil Society mean?
It encompases political activity of non-state actors who persure movements related to social justice and human rights. Made up of people who make collective decisions and actions together that act within the barriers of law
What is an NGO?
a Non-Governmental organization are non profit organizations with goals and functions that can act domestically or internationally.
help with humanitarian relief, promote legal changes for human rights, legal aid, documentation
what are Labour Unions?
fight for wages, good working conditions, benifits, saftey in the workfield
What is an interest group?
associations formed to provide specific interest in the political system, not necessarily fighting for social justice
How does the Media affect Politics?
provides informations to the people
Watch dog: make sure political powers are not corupt, holds state accountable
Echo chamber: the media feeds you ideas that you believe in
What is classified as an old war?
fought between two states, often over borders, land, people, resources
What is classified as a new war?
proxy countries exist
new technologies
based off of identity ( religion, gender, racism, classism) instead of ideology (marxism, fascism, democracy)
What is national security?
protecting the nations citizens and institutions from external threats
countries do this by creating borders, armies, enforcing laws
What is Human security?
when people have Freedom from threats and fears
supporting migration, peace, human rights
