Reason for internal migration in China- lack of employment in rural areas
In rural areas it is difficult to maintain a constant income due to variables such as drought and other natural disasters. They therefore seek more stable and higher incomes in urban places.
Reason for internal migration in China- income gain
People are moving to urban areas to find employment which will pay a higher wage. An urban worker gets an average net income of $2570 more than rural workers.
Reason for internal migration in China- access to services
Important factor - especially parents with children (education)
Where is internal migration happening in China?
Along the coast - the Guangdong province is most popular.
Wilbur Zelinksy’s theory
Areas undergoing urbanisation experience high levels of rural-urban migration - rural populations declining. Eventually this may be replaced by inter-urban migrations.
ECONOMIC effects of internal migration in China
- With people moving from one location to another, a number of economic transactions take place that create a flow of goods and services - sales of houses etc.
- With decreased services in rural areas its hard to attract new families: creates economic stress
ENVIRONMENTAL effects of internal migration in China
- Rapid population growth raises environmental concerns: deforestation to build houses, degradation of water and air, loss of biodiversity (plant and animal species).
- Government in response to this has established nature reserves and forested parks to preserve biodiversity
SOCIAL effects of internal migration in China
- Most people who migrate are of younger age groups (18-40)
- The large numbers of people moving away puts pressure on businesses and services - hard to fill employment positions in smaller towns.
