Biomes Flashcards
Biomes
Different environments which are large ecosystems characterised by a particular climate and its dominant plants and animals.
Forest
A tropical forest environment with a large amount of rainfall Latitude: Tropics – 0-30 degrees Temperate – 30-60 degrees Boreal – over 60 degrees *covers 1/3 of earth
Tropical forest flora and fauna
Highest biodiversity of any biome trees and woody vegetation animals adapt to live in treetops
Boreal Forest (taiga)
coniferous forest that is found in colder climates in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the largest biome in the world.
Savanna/grassland
a grassy plain with scattered trees and shrubs
• Latitude: 10-40 degrees
• Few species of trees
Desert
an area that receives less than 250mm rainfall per year
• Latitude: 0 degrees (equator), mid latitudes and high latitudes
• Extremely dry and hot
• Hot and cold deserts
- Arid = 500 mL
- Semi-arid = 250-500 mL
- Extremely arid = 250 mL
Tundra
an area where plant growth is limited by low temperatures and a short growing season. Usually found at high latitudes or altitudes.
• Latitude: 60-90 degrees
• cold, open unforested plains
• hardly any sun
Freshwater
- Ponds, lakes, streams, rivers and wetlands
* Home to water plants (mosses and ferns), fish, insects, amphibians and water birds
Marine (saltwater)
- Oceans, coral reefs and estuaries
* Fish, invertebrates (octopus and crab), turtles and cetaceans (whales and dolphins)
Adaptations
special body structure, functions and behaviours to live in an environment.
Plants and animals in biomes
Plants and animals have adapted to specific conditions in their biome
Example: desert plants have adapted to lasting with little rainfall.
