Internal capsule Flashcards
Internal capsule
= route between subcortical & cortical structures
projection fibres; axons; white matter Emerge superiorly to thalamus as the corona radiata
• ascending & descending fibres connecting the cerebral cortex with subcortical structures: basal nuclei, thalamus, brainstem, spinal cord, and cerebellum
• Pass lateral to thalamus; medial to putamen & globus pallidus (basal nuclei)
AREA BETWEEN BRAINSTEM AND BASAL NUCLEI
INTERNAL CAPSULE FEATURES
Anterior limb
• Genu
• Posterior limb - info from VPN and VPL going to parietal lobe
• Retrolenticular part - visual info
• Sublenticular part’ - auditory (thalamus > temporal lobes)
* somatotopically organised
Commissural fibre tracts:
anterior commissure & corpus callosum
