Anatomical courses of the branches of the brachial plexus Flashcards
1
Q
DORSAL SCAPULA C5
A
- arises off C5 ventral rami & pierces middle scalene
2
Q
LONG THORACIC C5,6,7
A
- arises off posterior aspect of C5,6,7 ventral rami & runs inferiorly across serratus anterior
3
Q
SUPRASCAPULAR C5,6
A
- arises from the superior trunk, travels posteriorly & through the suprascapular foramen to innervate supraspinatus, then down through the supraglenoid notch to innervate infraspinatus.
4
Q
UPPER SUBSCAPULAR C5,6
A
- off posterior cord; short, passes directly into subscapularis
5
Q
THORACODORSAL C6,5
A
lat dorsi
6
Q
Lower subscapular C6,7,8
A
- off posterior cord; passes inferiorly along the posterior axillary wall to supply subscapularis & teres major
7
Q
AXILLARY C5,6
A
”- a terminal branch off the posterior cord;
- passes through the quadrangular space: borders = teres minor, teres major, humerus & long head triceps brachii
- winds around the surgical neck of the humerus together with the posterior humeral circumflex blood vessels “
8
Q
RADIAL C5 – C8 (T1)
A
”- a terminal branch off the posterior cord;
- passes from the axilla to the posterior compartment of the arm through the triangular interval: made by the inferior border of teres major, humerus & long head of triceps brachii.
- winds around the shaft of the humerus together with the deep brachial artery in the radial groove between the medial & lateral heads of triceps brachii
- descends between brachialis and brachioradialis
- passes anterior to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus & divides into:
- superficial sensory branch descends in the posterolateral compartment of the forearm deep to brachioradialis with the radial artery
- deep branch of the nerve penetrates the supinator to access the posterior compartment of the forearm”
9
Q
“MUSCULOCUTANEOUS
C5,6,7 “
A
”- pierces coracobrachialis
- descends between biceps brachii & brachialis - continues into the forearm as the lateral cutaneous N of forearm”
10
Q
MEDIAN C6-T1
A
”- passes between the 2 heads of pronator teres
- is the only nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel “
11
Q
ULNAR C(7) 8-T1
A
”- passes posteriorly between the medial epicondyle of the humerus and olecranon of the ulna (= “funny bone”)
- passes between the 2 heads of FCU
- passes superficial to the flexor retinaculum and enters the hand via the ulnar canal (Guyon’s canal) “
