Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
List the three intermolecular forces:
Van der waals
Ionic crystal
Network covalent bonds
Van der waals
Attracts uncharged molecules
4 types of these
Ionic crystal
Atoms held together with ionic bonds(metals give non metals take)
Usually solids with high melting point ex. Salt
Network covalent bonding
Atoms are held together by covalent bonds in repeating lattice
Have high melting and boiling point and are insoluble in water ex. Diamond
List the four types of Van der waals forces
London dispersion forces- temporary attractive force
Weakest
Dipole-Dipole forces
Attraction between positive part of polar molecule and negative part of polar molecule
Only works when molecules are really close
2nd weakest
Hydrogen Bonding
Attraction between molecules and hydrogen atom(not covalent bond), covalently bonded to electronegative atom(N,O,F) to another electronegative atom
2nd strongest
Ion-Dipole forces
Between ion and neutral molecule that has a dipole
Strongest
