Interjection is a part of speech that demonstrates the emotion or feeling of the author.
あのう
“anou”; Um
We use “anou” to politely attract people’s attention when we want to say or ask something.
そうですか。
“Sou desu ka”; Is that so?
Used to express surprise when we learn something new.
へえ
“hee”; Oh! (strong surprise and interest)
To show interest in what another person is saying we often say “hee” whilst nodding.
そうですね。
“Sou desu ne.”; That is so; That’s right; Let me think.
We use “sou desu ne” to agree with someone or to give ourselves time to think before answering a question.
すみません、ちょっと。
“Sumimasen, chotto”; Sorry, it’s a little (personal).
If you don’t wish to reveal your age (or don’t wish to say something in general), you can say this phrase.
ところで
“tokorode”; By the way
じゃあ
“jaa”; In that case
