Q

Comm purpose, focus and style according to gender

A
  • according to a sociolinguist, Deborah Tannen, she identifies difference in gender dialect and different use of language by male and females.
  • Tannen states that men communicate to maintain and build status and also to communicate information (Message oriented), whereas women communicate to build connections, and seek and offer support.
  • for non-verbal comm, Tannen also found that women tend to hold more eye contact and nod head to indicate they are listening.

Therefore, gender has influence on comm and that gender roles make influence social relationships and social control in certain settings.
