Intercostal Space Flashcards
Where is the intercostal space?
In between two adjacent ribs
What does the intercostal space contain?
Intercostal muscles, nerves, arteries, veins and investing fascia.
What are the three types of intercostal muscles?
- External intercostals
- internal intercostals
- innermost intercostals
What muscle facilitates forced inspiration?
External intercostals
What muscle facilitates forced expiration?
Internal and innermost intercostals
How many pairs of external intercostal muscles are there?
11
What muscles are the external intercostals continuous with?
External obliques abdomen
Attachment of external intercostal muscles?
Originate at lower border of the rib, inserting into the superior border of the rib
Actions of external intercostal muscles?
Elevates the ribs, increasing thoracic volume
Innervation of intercostal muscles?
Intercostal nerve (T1-T11)
What supplies blood to the external intercostals?
Anterior and posterior intercostal arteries
What supplies blood to the internal and innermost intercostal muscles?
Anterior and posterior intercostal arteries
Where do the innermost intercostal muscles originate from?
From the costal groove of one rib
Where is the neurovascular bundle located?
In the costal groove, in the undersurface of each rib, between the internal intercostal muscle and innermost intercostal muscle
How is the neurovascular bundle arranged?
From most superior to most inferior: vein, artery, nerve
