Diaphragm Flashcards
What is the diaphragm the primary muscle of?
- Active inspiration
What type of muscle makes up the diaphragm?
Skeletal muscle
What innervates the diaphragm?
Phrenic nerves (C3-C5)
Paired phrenic nerves which are both motor and sensory to the diaphragm.
Peripheral innervated by intercostal T7-12
What spinal root values provide innervation to the phrenic nerve?
C3-5
C3, 4 and 5 keep the diaphragm alive
What provides blood supply to the diaphragm?
Inferior phrenic arteries, which arise directly from the abdominal aorta.
Which dome lies more superior and why?
The right dome due to the liver.
To what vertebra level are the crus attached to?
R: L1-3
L: L1-2
How many attachments does the diaphragm have?
One central tendious and three peripheral attachments
What are the peripheral bony attachments of the diaphragm?
- Lumbar vertebrae L1-3
- Costal cartilages of ribs 7-10 (attach directly to ribs 11-12).
- Xiphoid process of the sternum
What are hiatuses?
Openings that let structures pass through them
The opening for the IVC occurs at vertebral level….
T8
The opening for the esophagus occurs at vertebral level….
T10
The opening for the aorta occurs at vertebral level….
T12
What does normal inspiration involve?
Active contraction of the respiratory muscles to increase volume of chest cavity
Normal inspiration is…
Passive
