External Intercostal Muscles
A
- Extend from the tubercles of the superior ribs
- End ventrally in thin membranes- the anterior (external) intercostal membranes
- Pull ribs upwards + forwards during inspiration

Internal Intercostal Muscles
A
- Begin ventrally at the sternum
- Extend in thin membranes called the posterior (internal) intercostal membranes
- Pull ribs downs + inward during active respiration

Innermost Intercostal Muscles
A
- Incomplete + variable
- They pass from rib to rib deep to the internal intercostals
- Separated from internal intercostals by the bundle of intercostal blood vessel + nerves
