Components of The Skeleton Flashcards
1
Q
The 2 types of connective tissue in the skeleton
A
- Bone
- Cartilage
2
Q
4 major functions of skeleton
A
- Protection: of major organs
- Movement: mechanical basis
- Haemopoesis: making erythrocytes + B lymphocytes in the bone marrow
- Storage of salts: in bone
3
Q
Types of bone
A
2: compact and spongy
4
Q
Compact bone
A
- Strong + dense
- All bones have a superficial, thin layer
- Provides strength
5
Q
Spongy bone
A
- Less dense
- Numerous air spaces
- Core of most bones
- Lighter bones- aids movement
6
Q
Features of cartilage
A
- More flexible than bone
- Not as strong as bone
- Relies on diffusion to obtain nutrients + oxygen
7
Q
Types of cartilage
A
3: hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage, elastic cartilage
8
Q
Hyaline cartilage
A
- Most widely present type
- Articular cartilage: in joints + respiratory system
9
Q
Fibrocartilage
A
- Articular disks: within joints, in intervertebral + around the edge of ball + socket joints
- Tougher than hyaline cartilage
10
Q
Elastic cartilage
A
- Highly resilient- due to the elastic fibres
- Found in: the external ear, auditory tube, epiglottis + parts of the larynx
