Cells of The Immune System Flashcards
1
Q
Neutrophil
A
- Most predominant type of granulocyte
- Phagocytic cells
- Found at sites of acute inflammation
2
Q
Eosinophil
A
- Granulocytes
- Defence against parasitic infections
- Involved in atopic reactions such as asthma
- Granules contain: basic proteins
3
Q
Basophil
A
- Granulocytes
- Found in low numbers in normal blood
- Granules contain: histamine, leukotrienes, vasoactive mediators + platelet activating factor
4
Q
Macrophage
A
- Phagocytic cells
- Widely distributed in all body tissues
- Monocyte differentiates into macrophage
5
Q
Lymphocytes: B-cells
A
- Differentiated into antibody secreted plasma cells
- Specific immune response
6
Q
Lymphocytes: T-cells
A
Two types:
- Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL): kills virus infected cells
- Helper T lymphocytes: activate other cells such as B-cells + macrophages
7
Q
Lymphocytes: Natural Killer (NK) Cells
A
- Large + granular
- Part of the innate immune response
- Detect + attack some virus-infected cells
8
Q
Mast Cells
A
- Granules affect vascular permeability
- Granules contain histamine + heparin
- Role in allergy
- Protect mucosal surfaces from pathogens
