interactionist approach Flashcards
diathesis-stress model
states that the individual will develop schizophrenia if they have a biological disposition and an environmental trigger
an example of an interactionist approach as It acknowledges biological, psychological and social factors
Meehl’s model
Meehl (1962)
- stated that the diathesis was a schizogene
- everyone with this gene is susceptible to stress and develop schizophrenia
Modern understanding
we understand that many genes could contribute to vulnerability and even childhood trauma ( such as child abuse )
stressors can also extend beyond the idea of parenting e.g. using cannabis

evaluation of interactionist approach
complex interaction
evidence
treatment
complex interaction (INTERACTIONIST APPROACH EVALUATION)
there are multiple biological and psychological causes of diathesis and stress
the model is too simplistic
evidence (INTERACTIONIST APPROACH EVALUATION)
Tienari et al (2004)
- adopted Finnish children who had biological mothers with schiophrenia and adoptive parents who were critical, hostile
- children were more likely to develop schizophrenia
treatment (INTERACTIONIST APPROACH EVALUATION)
Tarrier et al (2004)
- found ppts who had medication and CBT and counselling had less symptoms after, compared to the medication only group
- although there were no differences in hospital admissions
