what is schizophrenia
a mental disorder categorised by psychosis
patients find it difficult to distinguish between reality and their own thoughts
what are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia + examples
symptoms that are an excess or distortion of normal existence
hallucinations
- distorted sensory experiences
-can be any senses but common ones are hearing voices
delusions
- a belief or thought that is untrue and irrational
- common delusions are paranoia about being controlled by an external force
what are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia + examples
symptoms that are a loss or normal suctions or experiences
speech poverty
- speech becomes lessened/disorganised
- can be difficult to produce words/sentences
avolition
-apathy towards achieving goals
- patients suffer a lack of motivation characterised by poor hygiene and lack of energy
ICD-10/11 classification system
used by World Health Organisation (WHO)
requires 2 or more negative symptoms for a diagnosis
DSM-V classification system
used by American Psychiatric Association (APA)
requires 1 positive symptom for diagnosis
