Interactionism Flashcards
What is the core belief of the interactionist crime theory?
the idea that most people commit criminal or deviant acts but only a small number are caught, interactionists are more interested in why people commit these crimes rather than the differences between them
What did Becker (1963) argue about deviant behaviour?
Deviant behaviour is only deviant through labels, breaking a rule doesnt necessarily mean you will be labelled as deviance unless somebody has a vested interest in these rules. labelling is followed by consequences
Which sociologist researched responses to accusations of publicly admitting incest on a small island community?
Malinowski (1982)
What did Lemert (1972) identify as difference beweem Primary and Secondary deviance?
primary is committed by the perpetrator, secondary is the reaction. e.g. Inuits who have stutters partially due to speech defects and partially due to external pressures to speak more fluently
