Social Construction of Crime
no act is inherently ‘deviant’, but is only as such because people have labelled it to be a criminal act
Labelling Theory
people or acts are given a tag that defines them as deviant based on the time, place, culture etc
Master Status
Thise labelled deviant or criminal tend to adopt a master status as a result of the self-fulfilling prophecy
Deviancy Amplification Spiral
the way levels of deviance or crime can be increased by the societal reaction to deviance itself
Primary & Secondary Deviance
Primary deviance- a violation of norms or expectations that does not result in a deviant being labeled with deviant behavior.
Secondary deviance- an individual violating social norms and expectations because they were labeled and stigmatized due to the behavior
Negotiation of Justice
an act only becomes deviant when others define it as such
Folk Devils & Moral Panics
Cohen- The creation of folk devils by the media can kickstart a moral panic
