intentional communication Flashcards
what is intentional communication. when does it happen
communication that has a discernable topic and is orientated to real/conceptual objects/events. happens around 20mo. it is denotative/about something e.g words, pointing, reaching to be picked up
what is pre-intentional communication
expressive communication e.g. crying, laughing, babbling
what is a social awakening
starts at around 2 mo. its much more to do with gestures at this point
when can an infant start pointing
12mo
What are the different types of pointing
protoimperative and protodeclarative
what is protoimperative pointing
its basically a request e.g. baby pointing to an apple
what are the 4 stages of protoimperative pointing
- goal directed behaviour which is blocked e.g. infant cant reach apple. 2. attention getting behaviour, child graps caregiver attention. 3. response waiting, child makes sure cargiver is paying attention. 4. directive gesture. child points to what it wants
what is protodeclerative pointing
pointing to comment e.g. a child points to an animal
what are the 3 theoretical perspectives on pointing
nativist. cognitive/representational. learning theory based.
what is nativist theory on pointing. what did butterworth say about it
human index finger pointing is biologically based and species specific Butterworth 2003. basically saying pointing is an evolutionary adaptation. evidence for this is monkey’s dont rlly point.
what is cognitive/representational theory on pointing. who said this
imperative/decolartive pointing can be seen to rely on understanding of others as intentional agents who have thier own intentional/attentional agenda. tomasello 1995
what is learning theory on pointing
its operant. the infant begins to understand that pointing will lead to adult head turn and subsequent infant-directed response.
