a thing or concept that cannot be directly seen, touched, heard, smelled, or sensed in any manner
e.g.- intelligence, happiness, depression, attitudes

the property by which test measure consistently what they are trying to measure
e.g.- if you were to measure the same construct twice, how close are you getting the same result both times

the property by which tests actually measure what they are supposed to measure
e.g.- does the instrument actually measure what it is supposedly measuring?
