intellectual development through the life stages Flashcards
What does piaget’s model of cognitive suggest
suggests that children move through four stages of mental development.
What is the first stage of Piaget’s model
sensorimotor - birth to 2 years
What is the second stage of piaget’s model
preoperational - age 2 to 7 years
What is the third stage of Piaget’s model
Concrete operational - ages 7 to 11
What is the fourth stage of Piaget’s model
Formal operational - ages 12+
What are the characteristics in the sensorimotor stage
- infant knows the world through movement
- children learn about the world through actions e.g grasping
- Infants learn things still exist even if they are not in sight
- They are separate beings from other things
- Their actions can cause things to happen around them
Characteristics that occur in the preoperational stage
- learn to use words and pictures to represent objects
- Children at this stage tend to be egocentric and struggle to see things from the perspective of others.
- They still tend to think about things in very concrete terms.
Characteristics that occur in the concrete operational stage
- Children begin to thinking logically about concrete events
- They begin to understand the concept of conservation; that the amount of liquid in a short, wide cup is equal to that in a tall, skinny glass, for example
- Children begin using inductive logic, or reasoning from specific information to a general principle
Characteristics that occur in the formal operational stage
- Begins to think abstractly and reason about hypothetical problems
- Begin to use deductive logic, or reasoning from a general principle to specific information
What did chomsky’s language theory say?
The fact that children everywhere acquire language the same way, and without much effort, seems to indicate that we’re born wired with the basics already present in our brains. He says that everyone is born with an LAD and that there is a critical period of time where children learn a language easiest.
what is an LAD
Language acquisition device (chomsky’s theory)The LAD is a tool that is found in the brain; it enables the child to rapidly develop the rules of language.
critics of Chomsky
lack of evidence, we do not know where the LAD is located, The model cannot explain why individuals with certain learning disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome have delayed language.
what is egocentrism?
Egocentrism is the inability to differentiate between self and other. More specifically, it is the inability to accurately assume or understand any perspective other than one’s own
What are the criticisms of piaget’s model of cognitive development?
> sometimes underestimated children’s rate of development
with support, children can develop more advanced concepts
children can be given experiences that help them move through the stages faster
some children can see things from the perspective of others before 7
