Intellectual development definition
Increase in complexity of processes in the brain that continues through the lifespan
Knowledge summary
Knowledge is the range of information and concepts an individual is familiar with/understands that becomes more complex as intellectual development grows.
Memory summary
The ability to retain and recall information, can decline in late adulthood.
Language summary
How an individual communicates/understands others, develops continuously throughout the lifespan (This is learned through experiencing other people communicating as a infant)
Thought patterns (Concrete and abstract thought)
Concrete thought is a simple thought process that centers on the physical environment & objects - during early lifespan, this is the only way to think until developed further.
Whereas
Abstract thought is a complex thought process where idea’s are the focus rather than physical environment
Problem solving summary
Ability to find a way from the current state to the desired goal when there is not a clear path, this is completed through trial and error
Creativity & imagination summary
Ability to think in new ways that are developed by exposure to different experiences. Imagination is essential for optimal development during childhood.
Attention summary
The ability to focus on one aspect of the environment and ignore others assists in learning new material. This can be developed by attaching an intrinsic reward (Satisfaction of completing the task)
