Integumentary system Flashcards
Dermis
Dermis
reticular layer - deeper layer - main layer
cleavage/tension lines - order of elastin collagen fibers
Overstretched - striae/stretch marks ruptured dermis
Papillary layer - (superficial) layer - contains blood vessels
projections called papillae extend toward the epidermis
Hypodermis
Hypodermis
loose connective tissue
fibroblasts
adipocytes
macrophages
subcutaneous tissues - not part of the skin - 1/2 the body’s fat - fascia
Epidermis
Epidermis
stratified squamous epithelium
separated by basement membrane
less thick, no blood vessels, nourished by diffusion
cells: keratinocytes - keratin ( waterproofing) -
keratinization
melanocytes - melanin
Subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis)
Deep to the skin
Attached to underlying bone and tissue
Supplies the skin with blood vessels and nerves
Consists of loose connective tissue with collagen and elastin fibers
The cells of the epidermis are fibroblasts, adipocytes and macrophages
Stratum basale
Deepest layer of the skin- single layer
Keratinocytes mitosis is about every 19 days
One daughter cell- new stratum basale cell; other cells keratinized moves to the top
Stratum spinosum
Stratum spinosum
8 to 10 layers
Cells usually shrink from each other (spine) some mitosis occurs here
Stratum granulosum
Stratum granulosum
2 to 5 layers with protein granules visible
Stratum lucidum
Stratum lucidum
Thin clear zone
cells appear translucent
not present in thin skin
Stratum corneum
Stratum corneum
Most superficial layer (.25 layers)
dead squamous cells -discriminate or sloth off cornified cells- keratin and keratohyline
Skin color three main causes
