Functions of Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Five functions of the nervous system
Maintaining homeostasis
Receiving sensory input
Integrating information
Controlling muscles and glands
Establishing and maintaining mental activity
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
All the nervous tissue outside of the central nervous system
Sensory receptor
Endings of neurons or separate specialized cells detect temperature pain touch pressure light sound odor and other stimuli
Nerve
Bundle of axons
connects the central nervous system to The receptors muscles and glands
Ganglia
Collection of neuron cell bodies
Plexus
Extensive network of axons located outside of the CNS
Sensory division (afferent)
Transmits electrical signals called action potentials
Motor division (efferent)
Transmits Action potentials from the CNS to the effector organs such as muscles or glands
How many cranial nerves are there?
12
How many spinal nerves are there?
31
What are the two subdivisions of the peripheral nervous system?
Sensory Division and motor division
