Integumentary System Flashcards
What does the skin provide?
- Protection of body from environment
- Containment for the body’s structures
- Thermal Regulation
- Sensation by way of superficial nerves
- Synthesis and Storage of Vitamin D
What does the Integumentary system consist of?
the epidermis, dermis, and specialized structures (hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands)
What is the body’s largest organ?
The skin
What are the layers of the skin in order from top to bottom?
Epidermis, Dermis, Subcutaneous tissue (superficial fascia), Deep Fascia, and then the skeletal system
What is the Epidermis?
(epithelium) most superficial layer that has no blood vessels or lymphphatics
What is the Dermis?
Connective tissue that is formed by collagen and elastic fibers, it accounts for the strength and toughness of the skin
What is the subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis)?
Loose, fatty connective tissue, adipose tissues, functions to control thermal regulation, amount of tissue varies across different sites within an individual
What is the deep fascia?
Dense, organized connective tissue layer that invests deep structures such as the muscles, will form compartments which help to maintain muscular alignment and prevent the spread of infection, the compartmentalizing allows for greater vascular pressure development on the venous system.
