INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Flashcards
An avascular, superficial layer of skin made of stratified squamous epithelium
Epidermis Layer
An epidermal cell that make up majority of epidermal cells that constantly divide and produce keratin
Keratinocytes
An epidermal cell producing melanin
Melanocytes
An epidermal cell that recognize and remove foreign/harmful antigens
Langerhans Cells
An epidermal cell involved in sensation of touch
Merkel Cells
Deepest epidermal layer with a row of keratinocytes anchored to basement membrane and continuous mitosis
Stratum Basale/Stratum Germinativum
Epidermal layer providing strength and flexibility to skin
Stratum Spinosum
Epidermal layer that is dying
Stratum Granulosum
Epidermal layer consist of flat, dead keratinocytes
Stratum Lucudum
Outermost epidermal layer consists of dead keratinocytes that shed
Stratum Corneum
Layer separating epidermis and underlying adipose layer, containing collagen and elastin fibres with blood vessels and nerves
Dermis
Aka. Hypodermis. An areolar and adipose tissue functioning as a shock absorber and insulator
Subcutaneous Tissue
Portion of hair projecting beyond skin surface
Shaft
Part of hair deep to shaft that penetrates into dermis
Root
Portion of hair surrounding the root
Follicle
Muscle functions to contract the hair upright
Arrector Pili Muscle
Oil gland that lubricates the hair with sebum and located all over body, excluding palms and soles
Sebaceous Gland
Oil keeping skin moist, prevent dry/brittle hair, and kills surface bacteria
Sebum
Sweat gland functions in thermoregulation and waste removal by releasing sweat through pores/hair follicles
Sudoriferous Gland
Located at the external ears, which produces cerumen
Ceruminous Gland
Prevents foreign bodies from entering the ear
Cerumen (Earwax)
A hard plate of dead keratinized epidermal cells
Nails
Nerves in the dermis acting as touch receptors
Meissner Corpuscles
Nerves in dermis functions for pain/temperature sensors
Free nerve endings
