Integumentary system Flashcards
What are the primary functions of body membranes?
Cover body surfaces, line body cavities, and form protective sheets around organs.
How are body membranes classified?
By tissue types: epithelial membranes and connective tissue membranes
What is the cutaneous membrane?
The skin, a dry membrane that forms the outer protective boundary
What are the three types of epithelial membranes?
Cutaneous, mucous, and serous membranes.
What is the function of mucous membranes?
Lines body cavities open to the exterior and often adapted for absorption or secretion.
Describe serous membranes.
They line closed body cavities, consist of a visceral layer (covers organs) and a parietal layer (lines cavity walls).
What specific serous membranes are there?
Peritoneum (abdominal cavity), pleura (around lungs), and pericardium (around the heart)
What are synovial membranes?
Connective tissue membranes lining fibrous capsules around joints, secreting lubricating fluid.
Name the primary structures of the integumentary system.
A: Skin, sweat glands, oil glands, hair, and nails.
What are the protective functions of the skin?
Protects from mechanical, chemical, bacterial damage, UV radiation, thermal damage, and dehydration.
What are the main layers of the skin?
Epidermis (outer) and dermis (beneath epidermis).
What are the five layers of the epidermis from deepest to most superficial?
Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum
What determines normal skin color?
Melanin, carotene, and hemoglobin
What is the “Rule of Nines”?
A method to estimate the extent of burns by dividing the body into sections, each representing 9% of body surface.
What is the ABCD rule for detecting melanoma?
Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter greater than 6 mm
