Integumentary system Flashcards
What are the layers of epidermis from up to down?
Corneum
Lucidum
Granulosum
Spinosum
Basale
What is the characteristic of stratum corneum?
-20 to 30 layers
-Dead keratinocytes
What is the characteristic of stratum lucidum?
Only in thick skin(palms and sole of foot)
What is the characteristic of stratum granulosum?
-3-5 layers of flattened and dead keratinocytes
-Transition between living and dead cells
What is the characteristic of stratum spinosum?
-8-10 layers of keratinocytes
-Langerhans cells
-Provides skin strength and elasticity
What is the characteristic of stratum basale?
-The deepest layer of skin
-Highly mitotic
Function of keratinocytes
Protects and waterproof the skin
Function of melanocytes
Produces melanin, which contributes to skin color and absorbs UV light
Function of Langerghans cells
-Participates immune system
-Easy damage to UV lights
Function of merkel cells
In the deepest layer of the epidermis
-Touch and sensation
What are the layers of dermis?
Papillary and reticulary
Function of dermis?
Rich supply of blood and collagen
Characteristics of papillary layer
-Superficial portion of dermis
-Areolar connective tissue w/elastic fibers
Characteristics of reticular layer
-Deeper portion of the dermis
-Dense irregular connective tissue with collagen and elastic fibers
-Strenght and elasticity to skin
-Contains hair follicle, nerves, sebaceous and sudoriferous glands
