Integumentary system Flashcards
Functions of the integumentary system
- Two-way protective barrier
- Temperature regulation
- Houses sensory receptors
- Secretes important fluids
organs of the integumentary system
- skin
- hair
- nails
- sebaceous glands
- sweat glands
skin is also called
integument or cutaneous membrane
function of integumentary
- protection
how does skin protect?
keeps out pathogens and harmful substances and prevents critical body fluids from escaping
where are the sensory receptors located?
located within the middle layer of skin
what do sensory receptors detect?
temperature, pain, touch, pressure
what do sweat glands in the integumentary system do?
assist body in maintaining internal temperature. create cooling effect when sweat evaporates
what do sebaceous glands do?
oil glands, produce sebum, lubricates the skin surface
to cool skin?
sweat evaporation, dilate superficial blood vessels to release heat
to conserve heat?
constrict superficial blood vessels to keep warm blood away from the surface, and continuous fat layer acts as insulation
three parts of the skin
epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous layer
description of epidermis?
thin, outer membrane layer
description of dermis?
middle, fibrous tissue layer
subcutaneous layer
innermost layer of fatty tissue
what is epidermis composed of?
stratified squamous epithelium
- flat scale like cells
- arranged in overlapping layers called strata
does the epidermis layer have blood supply?
has no blood supply or connective tissue. depends on deeper layers of skin for nourishment
basal layer of epidermis
cells continuously grow and push old cells toward surface
what happens during the process of old cells coming out?
cells shrink, die, and fill with hard protein called keratin. keratinized cells allow skin to act as barrier to infection
what are melanocytes?
- special cells of basal layer
- produce black pigment melanin
- gives skin color
- protects against ultraviolet rays of sun
where is the basal layer?
located innermost in the epidermis layer
where is dermis layer located and description?
located between epidermis and subcutaneous layer. is a living tissue with very good blood supply
what does dermis mean?
“true skin”
what is the dermis layer composed of?
connective tissue and collagen fibers. strong fibrous protein give dermis flexible strength
what does the dermis house?
hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, lymps vessels, sensory receptors, nerve fibers, musvle fibers
description of subcutaneous layer?
third and deepest layer, protects the deeper tissues of body, acts as insulation for heat and cold
what are subcutaneous layer composed of?
composed of fat cells called lipocytes
