ch 18 endocrine Flashcards
endocrine glands
secrete their hormones directly into the bloodstream
exocrine glands
send chemical substances (tears, sweat, milk, saliva) via ducts to the outside of the body
two hormones by the thyroid functions
thyroxine or tetraiodothyronine (T4). And Triiodothyronine (T3)
calcitonin (thyroid hormone)
stimulates calcium to leave the blood and enter the bone
function of T3 and T4
increases metabolism
function of calcitonin
decreases blood calcium
function of parathyroid hormone (PTH)
causes calcium to mobilize from bones into the bloodtream
adrenal gland two parts
outer portion called the adrenal cortex and a inner portion called he adrenal medulla
function of the outer portion,
secretes corticosteroids or steroids, chemicals derived from cholestrol
function of inner portion
secretes catecholamins chemicals derived from amino acids
adrenal cortex secretes
glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex hormones
glucocorticoids
influence metabolism of sugars, fats, and proteins (cortisol) and are anti-inflammatory (cortisone). Influences—SUGAR
Mineralocorticoids
regulate electrolytes
Aldosterone
reabsorption of sodium/excretion of potassium. Influences—SALT
Sex Hormones:
androgens (testosterone) and estrogens influence secondary sex characteristics
