Integumentary Flashcards
Corneum
Outermost layer that consists of dead keratinocytes
Provides a tough protective barrier against damage, pathogens and water loss
Lucidum
Thick skin only (palms and soles)
Thin clear layer of dead keratinocytes
Adds extra layer of protection and helps barrier function in areas of high abrasion
Granulosum
Has keratinocytes with granules of keratohyalin and lamellar bodies
Water proofs the skin and helps form the barrier to prevent water loss
Spinosum
Composed of several layers of keratinocytes w spiny projections
Provides strength and flexibility to the skin contains Langerhans cells that play a role in immune response
Basale
Deepest layer consisting of simple columnar or cuboidal keratinocytes also has merkel cells
Responsible for the continuous production of new keratinocytes through cell division
