Connective Tissue Flashcards
Areolar
Structure : lose arrangement of fibers
Function: support + flexibility helps connect different tissues
Location: under skin and between muscles
Adipose tissue
Structure: composed of fat cells
Function: stores energy and insulates body as well as cushions organs
Location: under skin, around kidneys, in the abdomen
Recticular connective tissue
Structure: network of reticular fibers
Function: supports framework of lymphoid organs
Location: lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow
Dense regular connective tissue
Structure: parallel collagen fibers w few elastic fibers, fibroblasts main cell type
Function: providing strong attachment between fibers
Location: tendons and ligaments
Dense irregular connective tissue
Structure: irregularly arranged collagen, fibers with some elastic fibers
Function: provide strength to resist forces for multiple directions
Location: dermis, joints, fibrous capsules of organs
Elastic connective tissue
Structure: dense regular connective tissue containing high proportion of elastic fibers
Function: last tissue to recoil after stretching
Location: wall of large arteries bronchial tubes
Bone
Structure: hard calcified, matrix with collagen fibers and ocetocytes in Lacunae
Function: supports and protects stores calcium and makes blood cells
Location: bones
Blood
Structure : fluid matrix (plasma) with red and white blood cell platelets
Function: transport, respiratory gases nutrients, wastes, and other substances
Location: blood vessels
Compact bone
Location: exterior of bones on the body
Structure: osteons, canaliculi, osteocytes in lacunae
Function: protection of vital organs, supports soft structures and stores minerals
Hyaline cartilage
Location: fetal skeleton, costal cartilage, majority of larynx, trachea and nose
Structure: lacunae, chondocytes
Function: smooth surfaces for movement at joints, model for bone growth, supports soft tissue
Fibrocartilage
Location: invertebral disc, menisci of knee joint
Structure: collagen fibers(parallel), chondrocytes, extra cellular matrix
Function: resists compression and absorbs shock in some joints
Elastic cartilage
Location: external ear, epiglottis of larynx
Structure: elastic fibers, lacunae and chondorcytes
Function: maintains shape while permitting flexibility
