Q

White mater

A

Most deep in brain and superficial in spinal cord

White due to myelinated axons

Carries info all ab transmission and direction

Q

What are cranial meninges

A

Connective tissue that separates brain from cranial bones

Protects blood vessels of brain and even forms some large veins for drainage of blood

Contains CSF

Q

Meninges

A

Superficial layer dura mater: 2 layers periosteal layer (superficial) and meningeal layer

Arachnoid mater: web of fibers

Pia mater: deepest and adheres to brain

Subarachnoid space is between arachnoid and pia and contains CSF

Q

Cranial dura septa

A

Flax cerebri: longitudinal fissure and separates left and right cerebral hemispheres

Falx cerebelli: separates left and right cerebellar hemispheres

Diaphragma sellae: septum between pituitary gland and hypothalamus

Tentorium cerebelli: horizontal fold that seperates cerebellum from anterior opening

Q

Dural venous sinuses form when two layers of dura mater separate

A

Falx cerebri: superior and inferior sagittal sinus

Q

CSF func

A

Buoyancy: brain floats in CSF
Protection: provides liquid cushion
Environmental stability: CSF transports nutrients and gets rid of waste from brain
