Integument Lab exam Flashcards
Identify the two principle layers of the integument and possible 3rd layer?
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis.
Identify the 2 regions that make up the dermis layer:
Papillary and reticular layer
What specific type of connective tissue is in Papillary layer?
Areolar connective tissue
What specific type of connective tissue is in Reticular layer?
Dense irregular connective tissue
Identify the different layers of the epidermis
Stratum corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, basale
Name the 3 different cell types that are located in the stratum basale layer
keratinocytes, melanocytes, and tactile cells.
Name the cell type that is found in stratum spinosum
epidermal dendritic
What is the function of the tactile cell?
a sensory receptor to touch
What is the function of the Epidermal dendritic cell?
Phagocytic immune cell that engulfs invading pathogens.
Which epidermal layers are considered “alive”?
Stratum basale, spinosum, granulosum
Which epidermal layers are considered “non-living” cell layers?
stratum corneum, lucidum.
Why do the cells die?
Getting to far away from nutrients, and no blood supply.
Compare thin skin with thick skin - how are they different?
Thin skin-non kerantinized and lacks lucidum.
Thick skin- kerantinized and no sebaceous gland.
What are lines of cleavage?
Lines of cleavage are pattern of fiber bundles in the skin.
Why are lines of cleavage important to understand them?
Incisions made perpendicular are slow to heal and incisions made parallel heal better.
Identify the two types of Glandular epithelia “exocrine glands” found in skin:
sebaceous and sweat gland.
Identify the two types of sweat glands in the skin:
Merocrine and apocrine gland
What is Merocrine gland of sweat glands?
Helps to regulate bodys temperature. secretes directly on the skin. Example: Sweat gland.
What structures do you find in the dermis?
Blood vessels, glands, hair follicles, nail roots, sensory nerve endings, and smooth muscle.
What tissue types do you find in the dermis?
Areolar, dense irregular tissue.
What is Apocrine gland of sweat glands?
produces odor, secrete products into hair follicles. Example: mammary gland
What are exocrine glands?
secrete fluids into epithelial surfaces of the body. Example: Sweat gland, sebaceous gland.
What are endocrine glands?
release hormones directly in the blood circulatory system, modulate internal body processes. Example: pituitary
