Integument And Immune Systems Flashcards
Integumentary cocnsists of
Skin hair and nails
pH of skin
4-6. More acidic to decrease bacteria
How does hair heat and cool?
Traps heat to warm, moves sweat to cool
2 types of immunity
Humoral and cell-mediated
Humoral
Antibody production
Cell-mediated
Cells that combat virus and fungal infections
Inflammatory response
White blood cells are activated, release histamine, then signal immune response (causing dilation of blood vessels and fever)
Granulocytes
Attracted to site of injury where they phagocytize antigens and antigenic material
Neutrophils
Granulocyte that are attracted to cytokines and attract more white blood cells. Main component of pus.
Epsinophils
Less common, responsible for immune responses, especially allergic and asthmatic responses
Basophils
Like mast cells, involved in allergic and parasite infections. Responsible for release of histamine which stimulates blood vessel dilation
Monocytes
Large immune cells that differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells
Macrophage
Phagocytizes dead cells and pathogens. If pathogen is infested, it’s antigens are presented on surface o stimulate other immune cells
Dendritic cells
Processes antigens and presents them to immune cells
T lymphocytes
Specific immune cells that are reactive to only one antigen type, presented by a MHC.
