Insulation Flashcards
What are the three processes of heat transfer?
Convection
Radiation
Conduction
When do you use cryogenic insulation?
For processes below -101°C
When do you use thermal insulation?
For processes between -101°c and +815°C
When do you use refractory insulation?
For processes above +815°C
What temperature is absolute zero?
-273°C / -459°F
What are three categories of thermal insulation?
Fibrous
Cellular
Granular
What is temperature conductance?
C
Indicates the total rate of heat flow for the actual thickness of an insulating material
What does a low C value stand for?
The lower the C value the better the insulation value is
What is temperature conductivity?
K
Total rate of heat flow for a 1-inch section of insulation
What does it mean if a material has a lower K value?
Lower K factors are better insulators
What is temperature resistance?
R
The resistance to heat flow through a unit of area
What does a higher R value show on a material?
The higher the R value, the more efficient the insulation
What noise is permanent hearing damage possible at?
70 dBs
What is cladding?
A protective cover for insulation
What side do you pace the vapour barrier?
The warm side of the insulation to restrict the movement of moisture
