Aviation instructor Responsibilities (Notes)
○ Help Learners Learn and Emphasize Aviation Safety
■ Learning should be enjoyable
■ need to see growth
■ laws of learning and maslow’s to help them learn
○ Provide Adequate Instruction
■ analyze learners personality, thinking, and ability
■ slow progress from a student, give them subgoals which are easier to
attain
■ difficulty should be increased as confidence and ability are gained
■ overconfident learners and how to deal with them (raise standards, make
sure they still follow checklists)
○ Standards of Performance
■ don’t accept lower standards to please the learner
■ earnest learner is not going to resent standards that are fair and
consistently applied

○ Physiological obstacles for flight learners
■ don’t ignore negative factors
● fear of small aircraft
● strange noises
● motion sickness
○ Ensuring learner ability
■ pre solo
● capable of handling ordinary problems that might occur
● consistent ability to perform maneuvers
○ be current on latest procedures regarding training and
safety for the student
○ maintain current library of information
○ provide adequate flight and ground instruction for “special
emphasis areas”
○ Evaluation of Learner Ability
■ Demonstrated ability (mastery of all elements involved based on
standards of performance)
■ Keep learner informed (up to date with progress, progress should be
written down, respectfully point out deficiencies)
■ Correction of learner errors (safety permitting let them mess up and
correct it/ applying same elements to another maneuver)
○ Professionalism (SADPP)
■ S - incerity (straightforward & honest)
■ A - cceptance of the learner
■ D- emeanor (attitude)
■ P- ersonal appearance and habits (neat,clean,dressed right,being nice)
■ P-roper language
○ Aviation Instructors and Exams
■ Knowledge tests (AC 61-65H, endorsed for knowledge tests. if they fail
need to go over test)
■ Practical tests
● 5 years tsa, 3 years all endorsements
● do not sign somebody off if they aren’t ready
● instructor held responsible for everything
○ Professional Development (always looking to become a better instructor, keep
everything up to date)
