Insects: Origins, Evolution, and Extinction Flashcards
1
Q
What is a mass extinction?
A
- 75% of species go extinct
- Global
- Across taxonomic boundaries
2
Q
What causes mass extinctions?
A
- Bolide impacts
- Volcanic activity
- Global warming and cooling
3
Q
What are the simialrities between the deifnition of a mass extinction and its causes?
A
- Large-scale environmental changes
- Temporary or permanent habitat loss
- Decreases in resources
- Faunal turnover
4
Q
What was the end-Permian mass extinction?
A
- 95% of all species went extinct
- ~251 million years ago
- Cause: Siberian traps
- The impavt of insects was some orders experienced heavier extinction than others-leading to increased diversification in the surviving order after the extinction event (ex. Coeloptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Hyemoptera exploded)
5
Q
What was the Albian/Aptian Insect Extinction Event
A
- Modest extinciton
- ~80 million years ago
- Cause: expansion of flowering plants (?)
6
Q
What is the current extinction event and how do we know we are in one?
A
- Get an idea
- Collect data and test hypothesis that extinction is occurring (see definition of extinction)
7
Q
What are the causes of this current extinction event?
A
- Insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, NEONICOTINOIDS
- Light pollution
- Climate change
- Habitat loss
8
Q
How can you help fight the current extinction event?
A
- On a personal level: get rid of lawns, plant pollinator gardens with native plants, assist with natural science projects like iNaturalist
- Community level organizing
- National level political action
