Insect Body Systems Flashcards
Learn the internal and external morphology of insects
What are four strategies to locate and court mates (list and give an example)?
- Chemical (ex: pheromones, which are chemical cues released by one animal intended to change the behavior of another individual within the same species)
- Tactile (ex: male fruit flies tap female fruit flies to initiate courtship)
- Visual (ex: male fireflies shine to attract females)
- Auditory (ex: crickets and cicadas rub their wings together to generate sound)
What are the general steps involved in an insect molting?
- Grow inside old cuticle
- Form soft new cuticle
- Digest part of old cuticle
- Break open old cuticle
- Extract self and expand
- Harden new cuticle

What is the purpose of the head?
- Sensory
- Ingestion
- Brain
What is the purpose of the thorax?
- locomotion
- legs/wings
What is the purpose of the abdomen?
Houses organs
What does hemolymph transport?
- Nutrients
- Hormones
- Heat
- Defensive cells
What is recombination?
Recombination is when genes from two parent insects combine and mix to varied offspring
What is the name of the segmented system of ganglia that is mostly in the brain but connects to nerves and muscles?
Central nervous system
What are the three segments of the thorax?
- Pro
- Meso
- Meta
What portions of the thorax bear wings?
- Meso
- Meta
What DOESN’T hemolymph transport?
Hemolymph does not faciliate gas exchange
What type of circulatory system do insects have?
Open circulatory system
What is the process where insects lay eggs or egg sacs separately from their bodies?
Oviparity
What is the process where insects lay eggs or embryos in a casing connected to the main body?
Ovoviviparous
(ex. cockroaches)
What is the process where insects give birth to live larvae?
Viviparous
(ex. Tsetse fly)
What is the most common sound used by living organisms?
Substrate-born sound
