Inorganic Ions 1B Flashcards
What is an ion
An atom (or group of atoms) that have an electric charge
What is an ion with a positive charge called
a cation
What is an ion with a negative charge called
an anion
What is an inorganic ion
An ion which does not contain carbon (with some exceptions )
Where are inorganic ions located
in solution, in the cytoplasm of cells or in the bodily fluids in organisms
How does an inorganic ions role determine its concentration
Each ion has a specific role. Its role determines whether it is found in high or low concentrations
Function of iron in haemoglobin
Made up of four different polypeptide chains each with an iron ion (Fe2+) in the centre. It’s the Fe2+ ion that binds to the oxygen in haemoglobin
When oxygen is bound the Fe2+ ion temporarily becomes an Fe3+ ion, until oxygen is released
Function of hydrogen ions determining PH
PH is calculated based on the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in the environment. The more H+ present the lower the PH. Enzyme controlled reactions are all affected by PH
Function of sodium ions in transporting glucose and amino acids across membranes
Glucose and amino acids need a bit of help crossing cell membranes. A molecule of glucose or an amino acid can be transported into a cell alongside sodium ions (Na+). This is called co-transport
Role of Phosphate ions in ATP and DNA
when a phosphate ion (PO43-) is attached to another molecule it is known as a phosphate group. DNA, RNA and ATP all contain phosphate groups. It’s the bonds between phosphate groups that store energy in ATP
