How do H1 antihistamines work

A

agonist: binds to H1-histamine receptors and block action of histamine. decreases dilator actions, decreases permeability, decreases itching and mucous secretion

What is a major side effect of antihistamines?

A

1.sedation - use caution when driving or performing hazardous activities, second gen tend to be less sedating
2.seizures - overdose = CNS stimulation

inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 (enzymes needed to make prostaglandins and related compounds)

A

generates prostaglandins and protects GI mucosa, cannot inhibit COX 1 and not COX 2 or will get ulcers
