Innate Immunity Pharm Flashcards
How do H1 antihistamines work
agonist: binds to H1-histamine receptors and block action of histamine. decreases dilator actions, decreases permeability, decreases itching and mucous secretion
DOES NOT inhibit release of histamine from mast cells
What is a major side effect of antihistamines?
1.sedation - use caution when driving or performing hazardous activities, second gen tend to be less sedating
2.seizures - overdose = CNS stimulation
with is the MOA for 1st line NSAIDS
inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 (enzymes needed to make prostaglandins and related compounds)
What is COX-1
generates prostaglandins and protects GI mucosa, cannot inhibit COX 1 and not COX 2 or will get ulcers
What is COX-2
generates prostaglandins and mediates inflammation and pain
