injury prevention methods Flashcards
what are the injury prevention methods
screening
protecting equipment
warm up
stretching
taping and bracing
screening
-detects complications and abnormalities before symptoms occur
-CRY-cardiac risk in young
ECG-assess and monitor heart
-identify muscoskeletal condition of athlete
-assesses musle imbalances, core strength and range of movemnt and mobility
dis of screening
not always accurate
may miss mistake (false negative)
identify problem that does not exist (false positive)
protective equipment
football-shin pads
cricket-pads, helmet
rugby-scrum cap, gum shield
warm up
pulse raiser e.g jogging
stretching-increase flexibility
movemtn patters eg practicing shooting in basketabll
what are all the types of stretching
passive
ballisitic
active
static
what is ballisic stretching
use of swining and bouncing movemtns
good for athletes with lot of fleixbility e.g gymnast
static stretching
stretching while not moving
involves holding position for up to 30 seconds
active stretching
stretching focusing on one joint, pushing it beyond resistance
passive stretching
stretch occurs with the help of an external force e.g. wall, partner
taping and bracing
helps wit supporting weak joint and helping its stability
hyperbaric chambers
chamber has 100% pure oxgen rather then normal 21%
llows perofmer to breath in more oxygen
aincrease in pressure also increases pressure gradient
both ncrease inHB 02 saturation and pressure, means oxgen able to penetrate through restricted blood vessels to injured areas
REDUCES SWELLING
hydrotherapy
uses warm water
relaxes muscles
increase blood circulation, releive pain
-water buyoncy-provides support for body weight of performer
-reisctance of water develops strngth for perfomrer
buyoncy=support
resistance pf water=strength
cryotherapy
uses liquid nitrogen to cool chamber
take temp down to below 100 degrees
body reacts like it is hyperthermic
perfomer stands in for 3 minutes
in-blood shunted away from limbs to core to maintin core temperature
out-blood flows towards limbs where injured areas occur, saturated with oxygen helping heal injured cells
