fluid mechanisms Flashcards
fluid mechanisms
study of object or body moving through gas/liquid
examples of dynamic fluid forces
drag and lift
drag force
slows something down
reistance force caused by body travelling through liquid
acts as oppisition to motion, has negative efefct on velocity
surface drag
friction between surface of an object and the liquid/gas it travels through
wyas of reducing surface drag, tight clothing and arm hairs shaved off
form drag
force exerted by the gas/liquid on the objects leading edge
ways of reducing form drag , postioning yoursle fin crouched over psoottion also decreases the cross sectional area, increase veloctiy, reduce drag
e.g swimmign has to be thin and stright when moving through water to reduce form drag
factors which reduce drag
cross sectional area, reducing cross secional area must crouch fowards cyclist
increase velocity and reducess drag
another factor that reduces drag
shape and surface of body
the more stremalined and aerodynamic shaoe, reduces drag
bernouilli principle
e.g discus
air ontop has to travel further, faster velocity but at lower pressure.
air that travels underneath, slower velocity and less distance meaning higher pressure
creates upward lift force greater horizontal distance optimum angle of attack is 25-40
downward lift force
inverted aerofoil
e.g skier going down a slope
-greater frictional force created
-air above travels shorter distance then underneath
-due to angle
-air above car, travels at low velocity so high pressure
