Injuries Flashcards
What is an acute injury?
Occurs through a Specific injury event
What is a Chronic Injury?
Occur over a period of time
Give examples of a soft tissue injury?
Sprains, Strains, tears of tendons and ligaments
Give examples of a hard tissue injury?
Fractures, dislocations, damage to joints and cartilage
What are the types of fractures?
Transverse, Avulsion, Greenstick, Oblique,Spiral, Impacted, Comminuted, Open,Closed
What Happens during a dislocation?
When one bone is displaced from the other, often causes damage to the ligaments as when overstretched they become permanently damaged, causing joint instability.
What is a Haemotoma?
Localised bleeding from the ruptured vessel
What is a Sprain?
Damage to Ligaments
What is a strain?
Damage to muscle fibers or tendons
Explain the different grading of Sprains/Strains
Grade 1:
0-25% of fibers torn
Grade 2:
25-75% of fibers torn
Grade 3:
75-100% of fibers torn
What is an abrasion?
Superficial Damage to the Skin
What is a blister?
Separation of layers of skin where packet of fluid forms due to friction
What is a concussion?
Traumatic brain injury resulting in disturbance in brain function such as headaches, dizziness, nausea
What is osteoarthritis?
A degenerative joint condition where cartilage between the bone ends wears away
What is a stress fracture and what is it caused by?
Tiny Crack in surface of bone
Fatigued muscles transfer stress to the bone
What is shin splints?
Chronic shin pain, caused by excessive loading
What is tendonitis?
Deterioration of the tendon collagen, caused through repetitive strain.
List Intrinsic Risk Factors
Physical Make Up
Previous injury
Physical Fitness
Posture
Poor Nutrition
Age
Flexibility
List Extrinsic Risk Factors
Poor Bio-mechanical Training
Poor Technique
Incorrect Equipment
Inappropriate Load
Lack of Variance in Training
What does Saltaps stand for?
S-See Injury Occur
A-Ask what is wrong and where they have pain
L-Look for signs of bleeding, deformity of limbs, swelling etc
T-Touch Injury for signs heat, tenderness, loss of sensation or pain
A-Active Movement
P- Passive Movement
S- Strength/Resisted Movements
What does PRICE stand for?
Protection
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
What are the 6 R’s of Concussion?
Recognise, Remove, Refer, Rest, Recover,Return
What are the 3 stages of Rehab?
Early - Gentle Exercise, encouraging tissues to heal
Mid - Progressive Loading, develop strength
Late - Functional Exercise to prepare for return to play
Give different methods of rehab
Stretching
Massage
Cold Therapy
Heat Therapy
Contrast Therapy
Anti inflammatory Drugs
What are the 3 Phases of Physio?
1st Phase - Pain Relief/Reduce Swelling/Ice/Sling
2nd Phase - Tailored Exercises to maintain strength and movement
3rd Phase - Restore Normal ROM / Mobilise joint and strengthen injured area
What are the Types of Surgery?
Knee Alignment surgery/ Meniscus tear
Arthroscopy/keyhole surgery
ACL Reconstruction
Open Surgery
