What is the toxic triad in terms of child protection?
If there is domestic violence in the home, Parent who’s got a mental health problem, or a substance misuser- significantly increase risk of child comes to harm

- Late presentation
- Hx changes on repeating
- Hx inconsistent with findings
When should bruising raise concern?
- Any bruise in non-mobile infant
- Petechiae
- Clusters
- Extensive injuries with no explanation
- Injury no consistent with Hx or developmental level
- Location of bruise
How to distinguish between impetigo and cigarette burn?
- Both circular
- Burns often infected
- Look for distribution
- Look for burnt hair
- Healing
What mechanism cause spiral fractures?
Twisting injury
What are some signs of abusive head trauma?
- Predominantly <2 yo
- Presentation variable
- Retinal haemorrhages seen in 80%
- Neck & cervical spine injury
What is neglect?
Ongoing failure to meet a child’s basic needs
What are some categories of neglect?
- Emotional
- Medical
- Nutritional/FTT
- Educational
What does emotional abuse encompass?
All other forms of abuse- with physical abuse, NAI, CSA and FTT
How is emotional abuse defined?
Any type of abuse that involves the continual emotional mistreatment of a child (sometime s called psychological abuse)
Recognition of concerning behaviours including behavioural or developmental
Note down observed harmful caregiver-child interactions
What are some indicators of sexual abuse?
- Disclosure
- Sexualised behaviour
- STI
- Pregnancy
